A full mouth reconstruction is used when you have many different oral health issues that are causing you pain or discomfort or you have lost most of your teeth. If you have many missing teeth, then your dentist may recommend a full mouth reconstruction, as the process requires implants, bridges, and crowns. However, the process can be a great way to restore your smile if you are missing some or all of your teeth.
Full mouth reconstructions are complex processes that involve several different dental procedures. If your teeth are damaged or decayed, then the restoration process may require dental crowns or fillings to restore your smile. If one or more of your teeth are loose or missing, then you may need to have dental implants installed. If you are missing all of your teeth, then you may need full dentures or a full set of dental implants.
The process may be a bit costly upfront, but restorations can last for many years before needing to be replaced.
While a full mouth reconstruction can take several forms, there is one common thread that unites every procedure – the rebuilding of your teeth and bite to improve your health and quality of life. We will discuss some of the common procedures involved in full mouth restoration below.
Your dentist will need to conduct a thorough health assessment to determine the extent of the damage in your mouth and what the best treatment plan for you is. This may involve x-rays, scans, and more to get a complete picture of your mouth and how it can be restored. From there, your dentist will be able to recommend a plan of action and a timetable for completion.
Some of the most common treatments in a full mouth restoration include the following:
Tooth extractions: If a tooth is too damaged to be repaired through other means, it may need to be extracted. A tooth’s roots can become infected if it has been broken or damaged, and the infection can spread to your other teeth and even result in bone loss in your jaw area. You may also need to have one or more teeth removed if you are getting dental implants or another restorative treatment.
Dental crowns: These may be placed over healthy teeth to protect them from further damage. You may need them if you have had root canal therapy or are receiving dental implant placement. Crowns are also necessary after a tooth has been extracted when you have received dental implants.
Root canals: When the interior pulp of your tooth becomes infected, it can cause significant pain. The inside of the tooth can become swollen and red, and the pressure can build up to the point where it is unbearable. Root canal therapy restores the health of your tooth by removing the interior and replacing it with a special filling material.
